The 2019/20 English Premier League season continues with Matchday 17. In our inaugural edition of our EPL best bets preview, we look to get off to a hot start with our three best betting plays from the weekend’s games. Let’s get into it!
Sheffield United vs Aston Villa
Villa is hovering above the relegation zone and look set to dive into it after they visit one of the surprise packets of this season. The Villains have experienced all sorts of problems in defense during the first half of the campaign, leading manager Dean Smith to shuffle things around to try and stop the leakage. But the opposition goals look set to keep flowing after Villa defender and England international Tyrone Mings was ruled out of this game through injury. Anyone who has watched Villa this season can quickly tell you that Mings has been the pillar of the Villa defense. But his hamstring gave way in Villa’s 4-1 hammering at the hands of Leicester last time out and Smith will have to pull off a masterstroke to make up for his absence. Mings is unlikely to return for the remainder of 2019 and will be sorely missed in a Villa side that is seemingly allergic to keeping clean sheets.
Sheffield United, on the other hand, has enjoyed an impressive return to the English top-flight and has lost just one of their last eight games to sit in the top half of the standings. They’ve taken points from the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham along the way and look set to take all three at Villa’s expense on Saturday.
Recommended bet: Sheffield United win
Updated – This was a pretty clean victory for Sheffield.
Chelsea v Bournemouth
Fresh from qualification into the Champions League last 16, Chelsea looks set to continue their celebrations at the expense of a Bournemouth side that has endured five straight defeats. The Blues are likely to extend that number to six on Sunday and do so with ease. Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham and Christian Pulisic have feasted on opposition defenses this season and share 16 goals between them across all competitions. That’s bad news for a Bournemouth side that finds itself in the midst of an injury curse that has hit their defense hard. Eddie Howe’s depleted side will likely be without Nathan Ake, Adam Smith, Callum Wilson, Steve Cook, Joshua King, Charlie Daniels and Lloyd Kelly for the visit to Stamford Bridge. That’s six regular starters missing from an away fixture to a top-four side. Tally those numbers together and it all adds up to a comfortable Chelsea win.
Recommended bet: Chelsea -1.5 & -2.0
UPDATED – This was a pretty big upset. Let’s just leave it at that.
Wolverhampton v Tottenham
It’s the battle of the Portuguese masterminds: Nuno Espirito Sato’s Wolverhampton welcome Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham to Molineux Stadium in a game between two rejuvenated sides.
Mourinho has helped steady the ship at Spurs after replacing Mauricio Pochettino last month, yet its Nuno’s Wolves that have been stealing headlines. We’re expecting them to continue to do the same hereby causing Tottenham all sorts of trouble at home. After a shaky start to the season, Wolves have bounced back in style, moving up to sixth in the Premier League and cruising into the next phase of the Europa League along the way. Continuing the hot streak at Tottenham’s expense won’t be easy given Spurs have followed a similar trajectory since Mourinho took over. That includes a 5-0 romp over Burnley last weekend, in which Spurs ace Harry Kane netted a double. Kane, alongside England counterpart Dele Alli, represents a serious threat to the Wolves defense. On the other hand, an in-form Wolverhampton is the toughest challenge Mourinho’s Spurs have faced to date. Which side’s resurrection is to be believed? We think its Wolves.
Recommended bet: Wolverhampton/Draw No Bet
Updated – This was a pretty wild game in the rain. A goal in the 92nd minutes broke the draw.
