NY Legal Gambling History

New York is a state that’s steeped in gambling history; once positioning itself as a strict anti-gambling state, it has seemed to change its tone as of late. New York is the first state to ban gambling and conversely the same state that gave birth to the slot machine. New York was at the head of cracking down on internet gambling back in 2011 with “Black Friday”. It is also home to 32 casinos; both tribal and commercial. The first types of gambling to become legal in the state of NY were horse racing, bingo, and the state lottery. Horse race betting was made legal in New York in 1955, and the state lottery in 1966.

The next win came courtesy of New York’s tribal members. Their push for legal casino gambling on tribal land had become a success. In 2011 New York gave in a little bit more, allowing legislation for the construction and operation of commercial land-based casinos.
